Dr. Matthew L. Tompkins is an American magician-turned-psychologist who completed his DPhil in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the cognitive psychology of illusions, and his experience as a professional magician—before he began his academic career—continues to influence his work. Today he joins the show to discuss experimental psychology and share insights from his book, The Spectacle of Illusion. Listen in as Matt explains the similarities between magic/illusions and psychology, as well as how people can experience what feels like a paranormal situation using conventional psychological methods. You’ll learn how much of magic is driven by attention, what Anomalistic Psychology is, and more. You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://bit.ly/2G6Qh6Y |
